China Wu Yi, a Chinese based firm is now expected to carry out a major road expansion in Kenya in the next few weeks.

China Wu Yi won the U$158Million project to expand the a 25km stretch of Waiyaki Way starting from James Gichuru Road junction to Mai Mahiu turnoff on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The road expansion in Kenya which is expected to reduce the frequent traffic jams experienced in Kenya’s capital Nairobi is part of the World Bank-funded mega roads expansion project.

The other project that is in the World Bank mission is to converse of the 45.2km road between the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Rironi into a superhighway.

The World Bank officials added that with the conversing of the major roads around the city to Superhighways more so the one from the airport will ensure that the frequent congestion in the city ends.

“The project will see transport in the city ease up as currently we are facing a lot of congestion and traffic flow will be easily controlled” Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Director General Peter Mundinia said in a statement Wednesday.

According to Mr Mundinia Wu Yi will be responsible for the reconstruction of the 25 km dual carriageway highway with 10.5 metres width (that is, 3 lanes) of each carriageway.
The expansion will see the road have six lanes compared to the existing two lanes from the James Gichuru Road to the Mahiu Mahiu diversion.

The construction will also the major construction of 44km service roads that will be about 6 meters wise and the improvement of 3.4 metres wide non-motorized transport lanes on either side that will ensure the road users are safe.

This is among the ambitious plans by the current local government to improve on road construction and expansion in the transport sector.
