Samsung C&T Corp said on Friday it won a 793.46 billion won ($693m) order to build part of the underground portion of the Qatar Doha Metro Project from Qatar Railways Company.

The South Korean builder said in a regulatory filing the contract is slated to be completed in June 2018.

The company is part of a consortium including Obrascon Huarte Lain (OHL) and Qatar Building Company (QBC) which has been hired to build the project's two "most emblematic" stations for $1.4bn.

The contract covers the design and construction of the Msheireb and Education City stations and is valued at about $1.4bn, $500m of which corresponds to civil engineering and the rest to electromechanical and architectural work.

The two stations will be "modern" buildings and serve as transfer points to different metro lines or other transportation modes, such as long-distance rail.

Msheireb will be located in the heart of downtown Doha, which is currently undergoing an urban restoration project, and be the Qatari capital's leading metro station.

The station in Education City, which is located on the outskirts of Doha and aims to be a centre for educational excellence in the Gulf region, will connect with a regional railway.

Samsung C&T said it has "proven its capability in the Qatar market" by previously winning $385m worth of contracts for the Lusail bridges and road construction project in 2011.
